Jimmy Carter, peacemaker guided by moral vision but laid low by politics

Categories:

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a former peanut farmer, passed away on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100. His vision of a government that was both “competent and compassionate” helped him reach the White House, according to a statement from the Carter Center.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report the news, just before the Carter Center, Jimmy Carter’s nonprofit organization, confirmed it on X. The post from the organization read, “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia.

The exact cause of Jimmy Carter’s death has not been confirmed. His passing comes less than a month after his wife, Rosalynn, died on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96. She passed away at their home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family, just days after entering hospice car
